Day 3: Innermost
thank you for spending this time with me, this is goodbye… for now!
My life changed when I was 12, and I got my guitar. It was cheap but playable. I didn't really want it at first, but it helped me when I became interested in it and started practising and writing music.
After being very calm as a child, a change happened around the time I turned 10, and I started being angry all the time. I sometimes think about how my life would have turned out if I hadn’t gotten the guitar then.
My demeanor goes from being angry and becoming tranquil slowly but steadily through processing my emotions by playing music on the guitar.
I have written many songs about this, and another song on the album, ‘Unexpected Turn,’ is about the same thing from a different angle. So many of my favorite artists have common themes throughout their line of works, like Murakami’s book, and if I had to guess, I think this period of my life will become a common theme for me.
This album was written when I was looking back at my teenage years. You can hear in the music that it has more elements of rock than in my previous releases, but I mainly listened to rock and metal between the ages of 12-16. Led Zeppelin, Sigur Rós, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan were my favorite bands and musicians.
You can also hear slight influences from Debussy, but when I listened to his six-movement suite, ‘Children’s Corner,’ it was the first time instrumental music moved me in the same way as music with lyrics. It’s, however, not about Nostalgia but about mixing my thoughts and musical knowledge with this period of my life, like I was writing an album for my teenage self to listen to.
The album is named after the song ‘Innermost’ because that song captures that theme best.
The song is tranquil but has a darker side that is always knocking on the door, which the prepared piano represents, and when the drums and bass enter.
The song only has two different sections that the whole piece is built on. It starts softly and goes through a rollercoaster of drama before returning to the same core, but the blend of tranquil and darker elements is still there.
